The study, conducted in 2015, surveyed 1,000 runners each from the U.S., Canada, and Germany—amateurs who ran at least once a week. The findings reveal fascinating insights into running habits, preferences, and motivations. First, Canadian women were found to be the most open when it came to their running attire. While 62% of American women preferred shorts and only 8% ran without underwear, 72% of German women opted for pants. Canadians stood out even more, with 11% choosing to run barefoot. In terms of sports bras, the I-shaped design was the top choice, with 47% of respondents preferring it, followed by the cross-type (39%) and front-button (14%). Another surprising finding was that 74% of runners would choose running shoes over any other type of footwear if they could only wear one pair for the rest of their lives. This shows how deeply integrated running has become in their daily routines. When it comes to mental benefits, 40% of runners believe that running makes them happier. Additionally, 41% think it improves their relationships and sex life, while 35% feel that running helps them maintain better physical condition before workouts. Music plays a big role in many runners' experiences. 53% consider music an essential part of their runs, often seen with headphones on. Pockets (18%) and socks (13%) also rank high as important accessories. Social aspects of running are still strong. 32% of Americans prefer running with friends, while 24% use technology, and 20% enjoy running with dogs. Despite the rise of tech gadgets, many still value human or pet company during their runs. Blisters were identified as the most common problem, with 43% of runners citing foot blisters as their biggest issue. Finding a restroom (32%) and skin irritation (14%) also posed challenges. Inspiration for running varied. 37% of women started running to have legs like Cameron Diaz, and 48% of men wanted legs like David Beckham. Meanwhile, 32% were inspired by the iconic character Forrest Gump. Interestingly, 44% of runners compared themselves to red wine, believing that the longer they run, the better they become. Nearly half (47%) prefer outdoor running, with the Grand Canyon and the Great Wall of China being popular destinations. Even in bad weather, most runners stay committed. 43% switch to treadmills, but Germans are more likely to run outdoors regardless of conditions, with 52% choosing to do so. This survey not only showcases the cultural significance of running but also highlights how it contributes to personal happiness, health, and social connections.
