[China Packaging Network News] Starting from January 1, 2013, the national standard for food safety titled "General Rules for Nutrition Labeling of Prepackaged Food" was officially put into effect. A recent visit to stores and supermarkets across the country revealed that most prepackaged foods now come with nutrition labels. Consumers are no longer just looking at price or brand; they are increasingly paying attention to the nutritional information provided on the packaging.
In a recent report by Mintel, a UK-based market research firm, it was found that Chinese consumers are becoming more attentive to food packaging details. According to the survey, 87% of respondents are willing to pay more for products labeled as "all natural," despite some misleading claims on local food packages.
Checking the nutritional information has become an essential step for many consumers when making purchases. For instance, 97% of urban consumers in China check the expiration date before buying food, while 87% look at usage instructions, 82% review storage conditions, 78% check net content, and 67% verify the country of origin. Additionally, 67% check the manufacturer’s name and address, and 66% look for industry inspection labels. Brand awareness is also high, with 92% of consumers considering brand important during their shopping decisions.
The latest findings from Mintel show that Chinese consumers are using product labels to ensure quality and authenticity. Most buyers are conscious about checking the date of manufacture, which is a key factor in determining freshness and safety.
Under Article 42 of the Food Safety Law, all prepackaged foods must have proper labels. These labels should include the product name, specifications, net weight, production date, ingredients, producer’s name and contact details, shelf life, product standards, storage conditions, and common names of food additives. For infant or special dietary foods, the label must also list the main nutritional components and their quantities.
Moreover, packaged foods must carry the “QS†certification mark. When purchasing food, it's crucial to check if this label is present on the packaging.
For imported prepackaged foods, Chinese labels and instructions are required. These must meet the requirements set by the Food Safety Law and other relevant regulations. They should clearly state the origin of the product and the name, address, and contact information of the domestic agent. If these requirements are not met, the product may not be legally imported into China.
By being informed and careful, consumers can make safer and healthier choices when purchasing food. The growing emphasis on transparency in food labeling reflects a broader shift toward consumer awareness and health consciousness in China.
