[China Packaging Network News] Starting from January 1, 2013, the national standard for food safety titled "General Rules for Nutrition Labeling of Prepackaged Foods" came into effect. A recent visit to stores and supermarkets across the country revealed that most prepackaged foods now feature nutrition labels. Consumers no longer just rely on taste or price when making purchases; they also pay close attention to the nutritional information provided on the packaging. Recently, Mintel, a leading UK market research firm, released its China Food Safety Consumer Lifestyle Report. The study highlights a growing awareness among Chinese consumers regarding food packaging and labeling. According to the survey, 87% of respondents are willing to pay more for products labeled as "all natural," even though such claims on Chinese packaging often lack consistency. Checking the label is becoming an essential habit for many shoppers. For example, 97% of urban consumers in China check the expiration date before buying food, while 87% look at usage instructions, 82% check storage conditions, 78% verify net content, and 67% examine the country of origin. Additionally, 67% of consumers check the manufacturer’s name and address, and 66% look for industry inspection marks. Brand reputation remains important, with 92% of people considering it during purchase decisions. Mintel's latest research shows that Chinese consumers are increasingly using labels to ensure product quality and authenticity. Most shoppers tend to check expiration dates when purchasing items, reflecting a heightened sense of awareness about food safety. Under Article 42 of the Food Safety Law, all prepackaged foods must have clear labels. These should include details like the product name, specifications, net weight, production date, ingredients, producer’s name and address, shelf life, product standards, storage conditions, common names of food additives, production license numbers, and other required information. For specific foods like those intended for infants or other special groups, the label must also list key nutritional components and their quantities. Moreover, packaged foods must carry the "QS" certification mark. When shopping, consumers should not only look for this label but also confirm that the necessary information is clearly presented on the packaging. With the increasing popularity of imported goods, it’s important to note that prepackaged imported foods must have Chinese labels and instructions. These should meet the requirements of China’s Food Safety Law, relevant regulations, and national food safety standards. They must also specify the product’s origin and the name, address, and contact information of the domestic agent. If these requirements are not met, the product may not be legally imported into China. As consumer awareness continues to rise, the importance of accurate and transparent labeling cannot be overstated. It not only helps protect consumers but also promotes trust in the food industry.
