At this year's Salon de la Haute Horlogerie, the Piaget watch brand unveiled the mystery behind its new Altiplano collection. The watches feature a silk dial adorned with intricate embroidery, using gold twisted wire technology to create delicate, embroidered designs. Two new Altiplano models explore different embroidery techniques: gold thread embroidery and needle-drawn embroidery, each showcasing a unique artistic approach.
Embroidery has a long and rich history, dating back to prehistoric times. Ancient texts like Homer’s *Iliad* and ancient Egyptian, Babylonian, and Roman bas-reliefs all depict luxurious fabrics with colorful stitching. It is believed that Asians were among the first to craft gold and silver leaf, cutting it into fine strips and combining them with pigment for ornate patterns.
During the height of the Silk Road, embroidery played a vital role in cultural exchange between East and West, reaching its peak during the Byzantine era. During the Crusades, European artisans became fascinated by Middle Eastern embroidery, bringing these techniques back to their own countries and developing their own styles. Over time, embroidery was applied to religious and royal garments, evolving into an art form that continues to thrive today, especially in Chinese Zhang Wen art.
**Gold Thread Embroidery**
Piaget has integrated ancient embroidery techniques into its watch dials, creating the world's first embroidered watch using gold thread. The process involves stretching and mounting silk on a support device, followed by meticulous hand-stitching. The master embroiderer sketches the design onto the silk and then uses a cannetille at the needle’s tip. These precious lamels are twisted from gold thread, combined with platinum silk to produce a flawless, detailed dial. The entire process is time-consuming, testing the patience and skill of the artisan. For instance, the laurel leaf pattern takes five hours to complete, using up to three meters of gold thread.
**Needle-Drawn Embroidery**
This technique, which originated in ancient China, became popular in 18th-century Italy and France. Needle-drawn embroidery creates highly realistic and decorative effects. The master embroiderer treats the needle like a brush, carefully placing thousands of straight stitches on the silk. Each petal of a rose appears three-dimensional, with six colors of silk used to create a smooth gradient. Producing such a dial takes a full week and requires up to nine meters of thread.
**Chanel Camellia Dial**
Beyond Piaget, Chanel also embraced embroidery in its timepieces. Last year, the brand partnered with Maison Lesage, its embroidery workshop, to launch the Miss Chanel (Mademoiselle Privé) watch. Featuring a camellia embroidery dial created using a fusion of colorful silk and needlework, it won the 2013 Geneva Watch Awards for Best Artistic Craft. This blend of traditional craftsmanship and modern design highlights the enduring beauty of embroidery in horology.
