On June 27th, the "First Solid Wood Home Life Experience Exhibition" took place at the Beijing International Exhibition Hall. During the event, our reporter had the opportunity to speak with Mr. Zhu Changling, Chairman of the China Furniture Association. He shared his insights on the future trends of solid wood furniture, particularly for consumers in Shanxi. Additionally, he addressed some common misconceptions that buyers often have when purchasing furniture.
China is the world's largest furniture producer, and its industry has grown rapidly over the years. Walking into any high-end home store in the provincial capital, you'll find a wide range of imported furniture—European and American luxury sofas, British royal-style pieces, Mediterranean-inspired decor, and North American mattresses. Many of these products are priced well over 10,000 yuan, making them seem like status symbols. However, what many people don’t realize is that China is not just a major consumer but also the leading global manufacturer of furniture.
With over 70,000 furniture manufacturers and an output value exceeding 1.2 trillion yuan in 2013, China accounts for a quarter of global furniture exports. Nearly 80% of countries around the world import furniture from China. Even well-known brands like IKEA source 21% of their products from Chinese factories. International furniture fairs, such as the Italian and American High-End Furniture Fairs, showcase global trends, yet Chinese brands are increasingly making their mark on the world stage.
In recent years, solid wood furniture has gained significant popularity due to its eco-friendly nature, practicality, and design flexibility. In Shanxi, the presence of solid wood furniture in home stores has expanded, and local companies like Lishige have been promoting it through annual culture festivals. Over the past six years, the number of participating brands has grown steadily, with sales increasing by 20% annually. This year’s 7th Solid Wood Furniture Culture Festival will feature nearly 200 top-tier brands.
Zhu Changling believes that solid wood furniture is becoming a must-have in modern homes. As more brands focus on original design and branding, the market is moving toward greater professionalism. Consumers are now more brand-conscious, and furniture without strong brand recognition struggles to gain traction.
In response to economic conditions and policy changes, solid wood furniture in China now emphasizes practicality and aesthetics. The country’s furniture industry boasts advanced production equipment, with high-quality materials, painting techniques, and structural craftsmanship. While traditional Chinese styles still dominate, American and European influences are also gaining ground.
The variety of wood used in solid wood furniture has also expanded. Woods like white oak, red cherry, walnut, eucalyptus, and rosewood are now widely available, offering more creative possibilities for designers.
Solid wood furniture has become popular not only because of its environmental benefits but also because of its cultural significance. As living standards rise, people are more inclined to choose furniture that reflects their social status. Natural wood uses less glue and paint, resulting in lower formaldehyde emissions, making it a healthier choice.
Zhu Changling also highlighted how technological advancements have enhanced the cultural value of solid wood furniture. In the digital age, marketing strategies for solid wood furniture are becoming more diverse. Physical stores need to offer immersive experiences that go beyond selling products, focusing on lifestyle and culture.
Shanxi has a rich furniture culture, but its local manufacturers still need to improve both product quality and market influence. Brands like Lishige and Real Home can play a key role in promoting this heritage and elevating the region’s standing in the furniture industry.
