On June 27th, the "First Solid Wood Home Life Experience Exhibition" took place at the Beijing International Exhibition Hall. During the event, our reporter had the opportunity to speak with Mr. Zhu Changling, Chairman of the China Furniture Association, who shared his insights on the future development of solid wood furniture for consumers in Shanxi. He also addressed common misconceptions that buyers often face when purchasing furniture.
China is the world's largest furniture producer. Walking into any high-end home store in the provincial capital, you’ll find a wide array of international brands like European and American luxury sofas, British royal-style furniture, Mediterranean romantic designs, and North American original mattresses. Many imported furniture items carry price tags over 10,000 yuan, making them seem exclusive. However, the reality is that China is the top furniture manufacturer globally. Despite being a relatively young industry, it has grown rapidly, with over 70,000 furniture manufacturers and an output value accounting for a quarter of global exports. In 2013 alone, the industry’s output exceeded 1.2 trillion yuan, with 80% of countries around the world importing furniture from China. Even IKEA, a well-known brand, sources 21% of its products from China.
Internationally, major furniture fairs such as the Italian Furniture Fair and the American High-End Furniture Fair showcase the latest trends and innovations. While these events highlight global fashion, Chinese brands are increasingly making their mark. Over the past two decades, China’s furniture industry has developed quickly, but it still faces challenges like low industry concentration and immaturity. However, more companies are now focusing on original design and branding, gradually increasing their share in the global market and improving quality to meet international standards.
In recent years, solid wood furniture has gained popularity due to its eco-friendly nature, practicality, and versatile design. In the provincial city, the area dedicated to solid wood furniture in home stores is expanding. According to Zhang Yuhong, General Manager of Shanxi Lishige Furniture Co., Ltd., the company has hosted a Solid Wood Furniture Culture Festival every summer for six consecutive years, with more brands joining each year. Sales of solid wood furniture have increased by 20% annually. This July, the 7th edition of the festival will take place, featuring nearly 200 leading solid wood and mahogany brands.
Zhu Changling believes that solid wood furniture is becoming a necessity in people’s daily lives. As the industry moves toward branding and consolidation, companies like Huari, Federal, and Top 100 are offering diverse styles to cater to different age groups. Consumers are increasingly choosing solid wood furniture for its brand value, as unbranded furniture lacks the same market appeal.
Moreover, influenced by economic conditions and national policies, solid wood furniture in China has become more practical and stylish. Chinese manufacturers now use advanced production equipment, with top-tier materials, painting techniques, and structural technology. The dominant style remains traditional Chinese, with American and European classic designs also gaining traction.
In the past two years, there has been a significant shift in the types of wood used in furniture production. Woods like white oak, red cherry, and walnut from the Americas, along with African eucalyptus and rosewood, offer excellent hardness and patterns, providing greater design flexibility.
Solid wood furniture has also gained cultural significance. Its popularity is closely tied to rising living standards and a stronger environmental consciousness. Zhu Changling explains that as people's economic situations improve, solid wood furniture reflects personal status and wealth. Additionally, since solid wood uses less glue and paint, it emits less formaldehyde, making it more environmentally friendly.
In the era of handmade furniture, people traditionally made furniture from wood. With industrial advancements, wood-based panels became more common due to cost efficiency. However, in recent years, the growing demand for solid wood furniture is not only driven by its natural and economic value but also by improved processing techniques that add cultural depth.
With the rise of e-commerce, marketing channels for solid wood furniture have expanded. Physical stores need to offer more immersive experiences to attract customers. Shanxi has a rich history of merchant culture, and its furniture traditions are deep-rooted. However, local furniture manufacturers still need to enhance their market influence and product quality. Brands like Lishige and Real Home can play a key role in promoting and developing Shanxi’s furniture culture.
