Many old basketball courts have undergone renovations, either being completely rebuilt or repurposed after repairs. Since each situation is unique, it's important to handle them on a case-by-case basis.

1. When replacing an old court with a new one, the entire previous site should be fully removed before starting construction. The foundation needs to be compacted properly from the ground up, following the new design specifications. It's crucial not to leave any portion of the old surface as a base, as this can lead to uneven settling and cracks in the new plastic surface layer. The old structure must be entirely removed, and the base should be expanded to ensure a stable foundation for the new surface. Leaving remnants of the old court will likely result in damage to the new layer over time.

2. Old asphalt and cement concrete courts should also be treated differently based on their condition. For asphalt courts with significant cracking, the first step is to clean out the joints thoroughly and fill them with bitumen mastic. Larger damaged areas should be removed and replaced with fresh asphalt. After the repair, the surface should be cleaned, a layer of sticky oil applied, and then a new layer of asphalt laid down for a smooth finish.

For older cement concrete courts, all expansion joints should be removed, and debris cleared out before filling them with new joint materials. It’s recommended to apply an asphalt primer to the existing surface, followed by a layer of non-woven geotextile fabric over the joints to prevent cracks from reflecting upward. Finally, a new layer of asphalt concrete can be placed on top.

3. If the old cement brick or concrete structure is less than 10 cm thick, it's not advisable to use a paving method to create a new plastic basketball court. The original structure is too thin and may not support the new surface properly, leading to cracks and instability. This issue has been observed frequently in many renovated courts, so it's best to avoid such methods when the base is insufficiently strong.
