In recent months, the Administration for Quality Inspection and Supervision (AQSIQ) conducted a national product quality inspection on range hoods in several key regions across China, including Ningbo, Zhejiang; Shaoxing and Shunde in Guangdong. The purpose of this inspection was to enhance market standards, ensure product quality, and protect consumer interests.
The inspection involved random sampling from five provinces and cities—Zhejiang, Shandong, Shanghai, and others. A total of 17 out of 20 products passed the test, resulting in an 85% pass rate. This indicates that, compared to previous inspections, the overall quality of range hoods remains relatively stable.
The evaluation followed the national mandatory standard GB 4706.1-1999 and GB 4706.28-1999, which outline safety requirements for household appliances, including range hoods. A total of 19 testing items were evaluated, covering both safety and performance aspects. Two products failed to meet the mandatory standard requirements, while one did not conform to its specifications. However, all tested products met the criteria set by the recommended national standard GB 38771-1999.
Among the qualified products, brands such as Huadi and Baolan stood out for their attractive design and high-quality manufacturing. For instance, the Huadi 0 Yang 200202 European-style range hood and the Baolan 266 deep type model received positive feedback for their aesthetics and functionality. However, some products from smaller manufacturers failed due to structural issues, such as exposed live parts that could cause electric shocks if not handled properly.
Some products also had issues with the heating components, where the temperature rise exceeded the allowed limits, potentially leading to material deformation and safety risks. Additionally, certain models lacked proper insulation distances, increasing the risk of electric shock. This issue was often linked to the use of electroplated switches or panels, which can be easily touched and may compromise electrical safety.
Other problems included sharp edges and protruding screws, which could cause injuries during cleaning or maintenance. Some products also had mechanical hazards, such as unguarded moving parts that could pose a danger to users.
AQSIQ emphasized the importance of clear user instructions, particularly regarding maintenance procedures like cleaning the impeller, replacing bulbs, and ensuring the appliance is unplugged during service. Failure to follow these guidelines could lead to serious accidents.
In response to the findings, AQSIQ urged local quality supervision departments to publicly expose companies with substandard products and enforce necessary rectifications. This initiative aims to improve the overall quality of range hoods in the market and ensure consumer safety.
The inspection highlighted the importance of adhering to safety standards and the need for continuous improvements in design, manufacturing, and user education. As consumers increasingly prioritize both functionality and safety, manufacturers must take responsibility for delivering reliable and secure products.
