In the world of 3D printing, the concept of a "joint doll" has become a significant and recurring theme. Whether it's a lifelike humanoid like a Barbie doll, a futuristic mech-warrior, or even a replica of oneself, people tend to be more drawn to objects that resemble them in form. This fascination with human-like structures has driven many creators to explore the potential of 3D printing in crafting detailed and expressive figures. Last December, a Russian artist named Sergey Kolesnik, known for his work in 3D art, gained attention for his unique creations. He purchased an Ultimaker 2 3D printer back in 2013, which marked the beginning of his journey into designing and producing high-quality collectible toys. His home studio is fully equipped, allowing him to bring his imaginative ideas to life. His portfolio includes robot beetles, insects, robots, and alien designs—many of which are popular among children. However, what truly sets Kolesnik apart is his passion for creating sci-fi-themed robots. To achieve a more refined look, he often designs his models to be printed vertically, eliminating the need for support materials. This approach not only enhances the aesthetic but also increases the printing cost. Additionally, because these robots have moving parts, each project can take around four days to complete. He primarily uses PLA as his material of choice, as it allows for greater detail and clarity in the final product. Over time, Kolesnik's work began to attract attention. Recently, a company called REC reached out to him, commissioning a full-joint robot for an upcoming exhibition. After accepting the project, he spent about three weeks modeling the robot using Autodesk 3ds Max software. Then, he used his Ultimaker 2 to print the 36 cm tall robot over the course of two weeks. The finished creation was named Titan-Rec, and it features fully movable joints. As seen in the images, the level of detail in this 3D-printed robot is impressive, especially considering that it was made using an affordable desktop 3D printer. The project highlights the growing capabilities of 3D printing technology and the creativity of artists who push its limits.
