In 400m track and field facilities, safety for athletes and training requirements often necessitate the inclusion of additional areas outside the main track. These areas, typically covered with plastic surfaces, are referred to as the "aid area." When constructing at the grassroots level, it is essential to plan these auxiliary zones alongside the main track. While the primary running surface should be the focus during construction, building them separately can result in numerous joints. If not carefully managed, construction equipment and vehicles passing over the main track can cause unnecessary damage. Therefore, it is recommended to construct the auxiliary areas simultaneously with the main track, especially for asphalt concrete and lower layers, to ensure a smooth and coordinated process.
For the asphalt concrete paving in the auxiliary area, a team of skilled workers should be organized. The day of the main track paving should be scheduled one to two hours earlier. Based on the overall paving sequence, the four sections of the auxiliary area should be pre-marked according to the design drawings. After the paving is completed, refer to Figure 1.4.18. Once the first zone is done, the asphalt paver begins its work. After the paver finishes, the joints are manually leveled and connected. Once the second manually paved section is complete, the paving machine arrives to continue the work, ensuring a smooth and even seam. The third area is then manually paved until it is fully completed.
The manual paving of the auxiliary area should be monitored by a surveyor using a 5m x 5m grid system. The outer edges of the main track and the auxiliary area often have variable slope points. It is crucial to rely on measured height control rather than visual estimation to prevent deformation of the main track's slope. This method ensures accuracy and maintains the integrity of the entire track structure. Proper planning and execution of both the main and auxiliary areas are essential to create a safe and functional environment for athletes.
