Patrick Jouin: From Product To Interior Design With Class And Elegance

Patrick Jouin was born in Nantes, France, in 1967. After completing his education at the École Nationale de la Création Industrielle (ENSCI) in 1992, he began designing for Thomson multimedia under the guidance of Philippe Starck. Shortly after graduation, he was recruited by Starck to join Thomson Multimedia and later spent five years working at Starck's firm. "Many people mistakenly believe I was his protégé," Jouin once remarked, "but in reality, I parted ways with him over a decade ago." Despite this, he acknowledges the profound influence Starck had on him, introducing him to furniture design and emphasizing the importance of curiosity in the design process.

An integral figure in Jouin's career has been Manku, a Canadian-trained architect who has been his partner since 2006. Together, they manage Jouin Manku Studio, which is currently handling notable projects such as a "James Bond-style" residence in London, a winery in the Bordeaux region, and the restoration of the 12th-century Abbaye de Fontevraud in Anjou. Additionally, Jouin operates a separate company, Patrick Jouin ID, focused on industrial design.

THE PROJECTS

Mandarin Oriental Hotel

The Mandarin Oriental Hotel in Paris, a collaborative effort between the Paris-based Jouin Manku studio and Patrick Jouin ID, stands as a testament to innovative design. This luxurious venue features two restaurants, a bar, a patisserie, and various garden settings. Green spaces seamlessly transition guests into a light-filled dining area infused with the scent of camellias, blurring the lines between indoor and outdoor environments. The use of wood veneer on columns and circulation areas evokes images of garden trees and pathways. For this project, the table and chair legs were crafted to resemble growing plants emerging from the ground, adding a unique touch.

Hotel Plaza Athénée

The bar and restaurant at the Plaza Athénée in Paris have undergone a complete transformation thanks to the design expertise of the Jouin Manku studio. Working much like renowned fashion designers, Patrick Jouin and Sanjit Manku surrounded themselves with skilled artisans to ensure every detail aligned with their vision. The only element retained from the previous design is the ceiling chandelier, now mirrored in the polished stainless steel domes on the floor. These domes reinterpret the traditional domed plate covers crafted by 'Meilleur Ouvrier de France' – Matinox and Atelier Pierre-Yves Le Floc’h. A striking timber alcove encircles a single table, providing privacy. The outer surface is made of unfinished timber, consisting of curved oak strips joined together in a design reminiscent of a fishing boat's hull. The inner surface, finished with molded plaster, bears an imprint resembling a mushroom, inspired by the restaurant's old vegetable-decorated screens.

Abbaye de Fontevraud

Around the priory, the cloister serves as the 'stone heart' of Saint-Lazare. To breathe new life into this space, Patrick Jouin and Sanjit Manku chose transparency. Freestanding glass partitions restore part of the cloister to its original purpose as a walking area, while the remainder houses the restaurant. The table arrangement encourages guests to gaze outside toward a garden planted with aromatic and medicinal herbs, which chef Thibaut Ruggeri uses as needed. The 88-seat restaurant extends into the chapter house, where the furniture, both restrained and contemporary, has been custom-made to fit architectural constraints. For example, the fabric and leather banquettes placed on the chapter house's stone benches and the hanging wooden lights, designed to address challenging acoustics, are noteworthy cases.
