**Kite Packaging Celebrates Shortlisting at UK Packaging Awards 2022** I’m thrilled to share some fantastic news with everyone—Kite Packaging has made it to the final round for several categories at the prestigious UK Packaging Awards 2022! We’ve been shortlisted in the following categories: - **Corporate Social Responsibility Initiative of the Year** - **Design Team of the Year** - **Supply Chain Solution of the Year** - **Packaging Company of the Year** A huge shout-out to our incredible team of packaging experts and the entire Kite family for their relentless hard work and dedication. It’s because of all of you that we’re recognized as leaders in the packaging industry. Here’s a closer look at what makes us proud contenders: --- ### **Packaging Company of the Year** Since our inception, Kite has championed an employee-share ownership model that’s set us apart. This unique philosophy has driven us to become the fastest-growing and most profitable packaging distributor in the UK. Last year was nothing short of extraordinary. Online shopping boomed, and so did the demand for packaging. With an Order To Invoice (OTIF) rate exceeding 99%, our stock value climbed to £11.919 million. This phenomenal growth enabled us to acquire ShredHouse and open our new Distribution and Central Services Centre, expanding our operational footprint by 200,000 square feet. We’ve also invested heavily in talent development. Through our Sales Academy, we onboarded ten Business Development trainees and welcomed new graduates. Additionally, five team members are pursuing the Higher Degree Apprenticeship Packaging Professional (HDAPP) program at Sheffield University. To fuel innovation, we’ve established our very own Mobile Packaging Laboratory (MPL), a £600,000 investment featuring cutting-edge systems designed to tackle environmental challenges. Equipped with tools like a drop test facility, 3D scanner, and more, the MPL travels to customer sites to demonstrate sustainable packaging solutions. Our commitment to sustainability extends beyond our operations. We’ve achieved carbon neutrality under Scopes 1 and 2, with plans to address Scope 3 in the future. In doing so, we’ve helped our clients reduce their plastic usage by 398 tonnes and CO₂ emissions by 920 tonnes. ![Kite Packaging Group Limited Carbon Neutral Britain Certification](http://bsg-i.nbxc.com/blog/016358361b549ea9d2f2a868360b4c9b.jpg) --- ### **Design Team of the Year** At Kite, we’re always pushing boundaries to create eco-friendly packaging solutions. Our AMED teams and packaging technologists focus on minimizing material usage while ensuring durability for reuse. This approach not only reduces environmental impact but also avoids challenges related to sustainable disposal. Take, for instance, our innovative “hive paper.” A single roll of this paper replaces four rolls of traditional bubble wrap, making it both sustainable and cost-effective. Our S2 division works tirelessly to optimize load retention and reduce plastic usage where it’s unavoidable. Through on-site audits, they’ve helped businesses cut their plastic usage by 290 tonnes since 2019, all without compromising safety or functionality. #### **Circular Economy Solutions** One remarkable example of our efforts is a customer project focused on enhancing custom packaging sustainability. Initially, the design involved a corrugated outer box paired with unsustainable stratocell foam fittings. The redesign uses fully recyclable corrugated fiberboard, aligning perfectly with a circular economy. Now, each box holds two parts instead of one, halving the number of outer boxes required. This change not only reduces material usage but also cuts down on transportation-related carbon emissions. #### **Engaging Customers** We take pride in involving customers at every stage of the process. Whether it’s visiting their sites or inviting them aboard our MPL, we ensure they’re part of the journey toward sustainable innovation. Our “test-cube” tool demonstrates packaging performance after multiple drop tests, while load retention audits highlight areas where plastic can be reduced. With advanced 3D scanning technology, we’re even able to fine-tune designs to perfection. ![Kite Packaging's State-of-the-Art Mobile Packaging Laboratory](http://bsg-i.nbxc.com/blog/b7a0b03a0fd3f27c3b9cf52148643157.jpg) --- ### **Supply Chain Solution of the Year** A client approached us with a pressing issue—a transit pack that lacked stability, often collapsing under heavy loads. Not only was its design flawed, but its assembly process, storage needs, and environmental impact were also suboptimal. After rigorous real-time international transit testing and lab-based compression analysis, we delivered a redesigned solution. The new pack features a fully recyclable cap, tray, and sleeve, boosting stability and stacking strength. Material usage dropped by 41%, and packing time was slashed by 50%. Components now arrive flat-packed, making assembly and storage more efficient. ![Components of New Transit Pack](http://bsg-i.nbxc.com/blog/e41b2b3c851ae2222cd78fc34f8677e7.jpg) ![How Components Fit Together](http://bsg-i.nbxc.com/blog/cb950c249e2c34e06242e621d5187c78.jpg) ![Complete Unit of Transit Pack](http://bsg-i.nbxc.com/blog/fffb3c567da89a329189d601b4dd7ba3.jpg) --- ### **Corporate Social Responsibility Initiative of the Year** Crown Paints faced a challenge securing round buckets of paint onto square pallets, with the added requirement of withstanding high g-forces during transit. Previous issues resulted in annual losses of £400,000-£500,000 due to fallen pallets, cleanup costs, and supply chain disruptions. Our team collaborated with Robopac to develop an automatic pallet wrapping machine capable of applying the precise amount of film required 85 times an hour. By innovating with virgin film and a 30% recycled-content film, we’ve cut plastic consumption and CO₂ emissions by 50%. Today, Crown Paints enjoys an automated system that secures pallets with a waterproof seal, saving £400,000-£500,000 annually while eliminating 40 tonnes of plastic waste and 92 tonnes of CO₂. --- The UK Packaging Awards ceremony took place on Wednesday, October 19, 2022. While we wait to hear the results, let’s celebrate these achievements as a testament to our commitment to excellence.
