1. Why use Device link profile?

So why use Device link profile for color space conversion instead of using ICC profile directly? Suppose we have a designed page file with CMYK pictures and text lines. Originally planned to print on the A press, we have already carried out the color management for the page, and now we want to change to print on the B press. At this time, it is necessary to perform color conversion on the page, that is, to convert the color-managed file to the B printer color space. According to the ICC color management method, it is necessary to convert the CMYK file on the page to the PCS space, and then convert the file to the target CMYK space. In these two conversion processes, the ICC profiles of the two printing machines A and B are used, one as the source device's ICC profile and one as the target CMYK space. During the conversion process, it is possible to lose some very important color information. For example, in the prepress design, we generally only use the black version (K) to represent black text and thin lines, and in the above conversion process, the single black is generally converted to black consisting of 4 colors (CMYK).

We know that such text and thin lines can easily cause overprinting when printing, and the edges are not smooth after printing. In addition, it will cause the primary colors on the page to become dirty, that is, the colors that were originally only pure primary colors are mixed with other colors, as shown in Figure 2. This is an inevitable problem of the ICC color management method in this case. The reason is that the purpose of ICC's color management method is to maintain the accuracy of the color and obtain the smallest color difference. Therefore, the visual effect of the color is unified only according to the LAB or XYZ of the color, and the dot composition that protects the color is ignored, and the result is the conversion After that, small stains were produced in the primary colors. These stains are due to the doping of other primary colors. Because the paper color and the primary color material of the source color space and the target color space are different, in order to make up for these differences and obtain the minimum color difference, the color management method of ICC can only change the dot composition of the primary color during conversion. For example, the two primary colors of C90% and M90% of the US Sheetfed Coated v2 color space in Photoshop, after being converted to the Generic CMYK Japan Std Proofing color space, become C70% M2% Y4% and C1% M85% Y12% respectively.

In order to overcome the above problems, it is necessary to avoid the calculation from the four-color space (CMYK) to the three-color space (LAB or XYZ), and then to the calculation from the three-color space to the four-color space, and directly between the four-color space build connection.
