At the recent sports team meeting, Duan Shijie, a member of the National Committee of the Chinese People's Political Consultative Conference and former deputy director of the State General Administration of Sports, pointed out that although more people are participating in fitness activities in parks and on the streets, many still wear inappropriate attire such as leather shoes, trousers, and jeans. This reflects a gap in China's sports culture compared to developed countries.
Duan believes that one major reason for this issue is the lack of effective channels for promoting scientific sports knowledge. While health promotion is widely covered in media, including TV, newspapers, and the internet, fitness education remains underdeveloped. In addition, he noted that coaches and professional clubs lack the resources to support mass participation in sports, which limits the growth of grassroots sports activities.
Cen Xieliang, also a member of the National Committee and chairman of Taishan Sports Industry Group, agrees with Duan. He suggests that vocational education could play a key role in training a large number of sports professionals who can provide guidance and education in communities and rural areas. This would not only promote a stronger fitness culture but also help standardize scientific exercise practices.
Yao Ming, another member of the National Committee, emphasized that sports should be seen as a form of fun and entertainment. He proposed setting up more low-level basketball courts in convenient locations to encourage children to participate and develop an interest in the sport. According to Yao, it's important to lower the barriers for participation rather than imposing strict professional standards on all citizens. By making sports more accessible, more people will be motivated to engage in physical activity regularly.
