Eating fish becomes smarter. This may be a "routine" for many parents to feed their children in order to eat fish. However, according to the latest research published by the University of Pennsylvania this week in the journal Scientific Reports, this is actually true! Children who eat fish at least once a week sleep better than children who rarely eat fish or even fish. And the IQ score is one-fourth higher!

Eating fish becomes smarter. Eating fish every week can improve sleep quality and IQ.

Previously, studies have shown that fish rich in omega-3 fatty acids (omega-3s) are associated with improved intelligence and are associated with better sleep, but do not directly link eating fish to intelligence and sleep quality. .

Professor Liu Jianghong, the first author of the paper and the School of Nursing at the University of Pennsylvania, said, “The research in this field is not mature and is gradually emerging. We are studying omega-3 fatty acids from our food.”

Omega-3 fatty acids are very important for the body's metabolism. Cold-water fish such as salmon, mackerel, clams and sardines are rich in omega-3 fatty acids. These fish have very high levels of omega-3 fatty acids and are the best source of access.

In this study, the researchers used 541 children aged 9-11 (54% boys and 46% girls) in China to ask them to complete a questionnaire about the number of fishes eaten in the past month. The researchers also used the Chinese version of the Wechsler Intelligence Scale for Children to test children's intelligence, and the children's parents answered questions about sleep quality.

The University of Pennsylvania team analyzed the data and found that children who ate fish at least twice a week scored 4.8 points on IQ tests than those who seldom eat fish or “never” fish. In addition, the increase in fish intake is also associated with a reduction in sleep disorders, which the researchers believe indicates a better overall sleep quality.

As early as 2015, a study published in Child Psychology and Psychiatry revealed that diets rich in omega-3 fatty acids can reduce the incidence of antisocial and aggressive behavior in children. Therefore, the paper collaborator Professor Adrian Raine is not surprised by the role of fish in this aspect.

Pinto-Martin, executive director of the Pennsylvania Public Health Initiative Center, and Professor Viola MacInnes of Penn Medical School believe that the research has great potential.

Pinto-Martin said that there is growing evidence that fish intake is good for health. We should increase the intensity of publicity. Children should eat more fish. It is best to eat fish from the age of 2 (no bones and have been chopped).

Raine smiled and said that if eating fish can improve the quality of sleep, it would be great, because it is much easier for children to eat fish than to urge them to sleep. If eating fish can also improve cognitive ability, it can't be any better.

Considering that the participants in this research group are younger, Professor Liu and colleagues chose not to analyze the details of fish intake reported by participants. They hope to further supplement this current observational study, which is determined by randomized controlled trials that eating fish can lead to better sleep, better academic performance, and other real-life outcomes.
