The "RIP" we often hear is the abbreviation of Raster Image Processor, which converts PostScript data into dots, which is used by imaging printing devices. However, today's RIP does far more than the function of output pixels. In the field of wide format inkjet printing, it refers to the application that the user is producing. From the execution of the design to the automation of the entire production process, the combination of hardware and software has become the nerve center of the printing operation.

What can RIP do?

We refer to RIP as "color management and workflow solutions." On RIP, there are modules specifically designed for application solutions, such as car stickers, fabric printing, and glass printing. RIP also allows users to set up templates with similar specifications, equivalent to the style sheets used by layout programs like InDesign. This work template saves 15 minutes per screen product and saves hours per day.

Fabric printing is a hot topic, and the current RIP and RIP modules are specifically designed to address the unique needs of printing on fabrics. The key to fabric printing is color management and high-speed production, which is able to reproduce the color gamut displayed by the device, which is what fabric printers expect.

Advanced color management is a basic function of RIP, especially when hardware manufacturers need to adjust their color ink set and add color. Therefore, RIP should also be able to control the color sequence.

Powerful nesting

RIP has also been performing more tasks that Adobe Illustrator usually handles as external software. It is part of process automation. Wide-format inkjet printing technology prints on expensive media, and it's important to arrange as many images as possible on a single board. This can be done by opening the file in Illustrator, manually nesting all the images, then saving them into a new PDF file, RIP processing, and then printing.

RIP is currently able to handle advanced shape nesting. The identification loop is another external task that can now be done on the RIP.

Currently available on the market to provide plug-ins for Illustrator, adding tools that create graphics for banners and body stickers. Design and prepress tools, as well as templates for specific end products, are an important part of modern RIP. The other is the ability to connect with other systems in the factory. Now all RIPs can be integrated with upstream systems to provide two-way communication. For example, sales people or customers can get status information of jobs through the network. Management information systems can also get real-time information: such as ink and material usage, which can be accurate. Track the cost of the job.

Someone once commented on the automation process: "I am not looking for tools that will make my designers and prepress work more efficient. I am looking for tools that can replace labor, reduce costs and increase efficiency." In production practice, customers can also see the greatest benefits.

Marching into automation

At present, some or even complete automated workflows can be realized in small-format printing. With the rapid development of wide-format inkjet printing technology in recent years, automated workflows have been gradually promoted.

The wide-format inkjet printed products are “personalized” or “one-off”, so each job is brand new and tailor-made. In order to solve this problem in the field of large format inkjet printing, more and more printing equipment manufacturers began to create customer databases. In the face of cumbersome and complex prepress issues, there are already prepress processing software like Zünd and Esko to provide a holistic solution. However, in the production process, there are few standard constraints, and there is rarely a complete replicable templated system, which also restricts the development of automation.

Wide-format printing is gradually improving the automation process, even if the complete automation has not yet appeared, RIP now has powerful tools to automate enough processes to increase efficiency and standardization.

Once upon a time, customers often asked "What is RIP?", but now they are asking "How can I really use RIP to make my business better?" This is really the future of RIP.
